El comienzo de clases ya está a la vuelta de la esquina, y si su hijo o hija empieza este año en Edison por primera vez, ¡bienvenidos! De parte de la Junta Directiva de la PTA, queremos compartirles 4 ideas para que este primer año se sienta menos como una transición y más como llegar a casa.
1-Se unen a una comunidad especial
Una de las cosas que hacen única a Edison es su comunidad: diversa, bilingüe y profundamente unida. Aquí conviven familias de muchos países, idiomas y tradiciones, todas con algo en común: el deseo de que nuestros hijos crezcan rodeados de cultura, curiosidad y cariño. Esa mezcla es una fortuna, no un detalle menor. Nuestra misión como PTA es justamente esa: crear conexiones significativas entre padres, maestros y estudiantes, fortaleciendo una comunidad bilingüe donde cada voz cuenta.
Nuestra recomendación número uno: no se queden en la periferia. Los primeros meses son el momento perfecto para presentarse, hacer preguntas y empezar a construir esas amistades que, con los años, se vuelven parte del corazón de la experiencia escolar.
2-Conozcan los canales de comunicación
Entre la escuela y la PTA usamos varios canales, así que vale la pena suscribirse a todos desde el primer día:
De la PTA:
Konstella — la plataforma principal donde su salón y su representante de salón ("Room Rep") comparten avisos, recordatorios y oportunidades de ayudar. Más información en este artículo.
Calendario de Edison — con todos los eventos del año escolar, disponible en nuestro sitio web y en Konstella.

De la escuela:
El Semanario — la directora Ipiña prepara este boletín semanal con noticias de Edison.
ParentSquare — la herramienta oficial del distrito escolar (SMMUSD) para avisos y comunicación directa de la escuela.
Aeries Parent Portal — para calificaciones, asistencia e información del estudiante (Contactos de emergencia y autorizaciones).
Peachjar — donde se publican volantes y anuncios de programas y actividades que ocurren en Santa Mónica.
Y si aún no lo han hecho, revisen elFamily Handbooky elFirst Day Packetde la escuela: resuelven la mayoría de las dudas típicas del inicio de año.
Suscribirse a estos canales desde la primera semana les ahorrará muchas sorpresas y les abrirá la puerta a formar parte activa de la escuela.
3-Participar es otra forma de decirles "te amo" a nuestros hijos
En casa les mostramos amor con abrazos, cenas juntos y ayudándolos con la tarea. En la escuela, ese mismo amor se traduce en presencia: aparecer en un evento, ofrecerse de voluntario un par de horas, o simplemente ir a saludar a un maestro. Nuestros hijos notan cuándo estamos ahí, y esa presencia construye su sentido de pertenencia tanto como el nuestro.
Para las familias nuevas, estos son los primeros momentos del año que no se pueden perder:
School Beautification (18 de agosto) — un día de trabajo comunitario para dejar la escuela lista para el año.
New Family Tostada Potluck (19 de agosto) — un convivio pensado justamente para ustedes, las familias nuevas, para conocerse entre sí y con la comunidad Edison antes de que empiecen las clases.
Primer día de clases (20 de agosto)
Back to School Night por grado (TK–2°) (25 de agosto) — para conocer al maestro o maestra de su hijo(a) y el salón.
Y a lo largo del año seguirán las celebraciones que hacen única a Edison: Día de los Muertos, Fiesta Familiar, Noche de Cesar Chávez, el Festival Multicultural, Noches de cine, Cafecito semanal, Jog-a-thon y ferias del libro.
No hace falta comprometerse a todo. Empiecen por el Tostada Potluck o por un solo evento, conozcan a otras familias, y desde ahí encontrarán su propio ritmo dentro de la comunidad.
4-Apoyen a la PTA y a la Ed Foundation
Ser miembro de la PTA es una manera sencilla y directa de tener voz y voto en las decisiones que afectan a nuestros hijos. Por solo $11 al año, cada familia puede unirse como miembro con derecho a voto y ayudar a decidir sobre los temas que más le importan a la comunidad Edison.
Las cuotas de membresía son solo una parte de cómo la PTA sostiene la vida escolar. Cada donación, grande o pequeña, financia directamente lo que hace especial a Edison: excursiones, asambleas, el programa de arte, música en español, teatro, el jardín escolar, y becas para el viaje de quinto grado, entre muchas otras cosas.
Además de apoyar directamente a Edison, les invitamos a considerar una donación a la Santa Monica Education Foundation (SMEF), la organización que desde 1982 recauda fondos académicos, también para las artes y los deportes en todas las escuelas públicas de Santa Mónica. Su generosidad también beneficia directamente a nuestros hijos y a todo el distrito.

Are you new to Edison?
The start of the school year is just around the corner, and if your son or daughter is starting at Edison for the first time this year, welcome! On behalf of the PTA Board, we want to share 4 ideas to help make this first year feel less like a transition and more like coming home.
1-They join a special community
One of the things they do unique Edison its community: diverse, bilingual, and deeply united. Here, families from many countries, languages, and traditions live together, all with something in common: the desire for our children to grow up surrounded by culture, curiosity, and love. That mix is a blessing, not a minor detail. Our mission as PTA is precisely that: to create meaningful connections between parents, teachers, and students, strengthening a bilingual community where every voice matters.
Our number one recommendation: don't stay on the sidelines. The first few months are the perfect time to introduce yourself, ask questions, and start building those friendships that, over the years, become an integral part of the school experience.
2-Know the communication channels
Between the school and the PTA, we use several channels, so it's worth subscribing to all of them from day one:

Subscribing to these channels from the first week will save you from many surprises and open the door to becoming an active part of the school.
3- Participating is another way of saying "I love you" to our children
At home, we show them love with hugs, dinners together, and helping them with their homework. At school, that same love translates into presence: showing up at an event, volunteering for a couple of hours, or simply going to say hello to a teacher. Our children notice when we're there, and that presence builds their sense of belonging as much as it does ours.
For new families, these are the first moments of the year that you shouldn't miss:
School Beautification(August 18) — a day of community work to get the school ready for the year.
New Family Tostada Potluck(August 19) — a gathering designed just for you, the new families, to get to know each other and the Edison community before classes begin.
First day of classes(August 20)
Back to School Night por grado (TK–2°)(August 25) — to meet your child's teacher and classroom.
And throughout the year the celebrations that make Edison unique will continue: Day of the Dead, Family Party, Cesar Chavez Night, the Multicultural Festival, Movie Nights, Weekly Coffee Break, Jog-a-thon and book fairs.
You don't have to commit to everything. Start with the Tostada Potluck or just one event, get to know other families, and from there you'll find your own rhythm within the community.
4- Support the PTA and the Ed Foundation
Being a member of the PTA is a simple and direct way to have a voice and vote in decisions that affect our children. For just $11 a year each family can join as a voting member and help decide on the issues that matter most to the Edison community.
Membership dues are just one part of how the PTA sustains school life. Every donation, large or small, directly funds what makes Edison special: field trips, assemblies, the art program, Spanish music, theater, the school garden, and fifth-grade trip scholarships, among many other things.
In addition to supporting Edison directly, we invite you to consider making a donation to the Santa Monica Education Foundation (SMEF) The organization, which has been raising funds for academic programs since 1982, also supports arts and sports in all Santa Monica public schools. Their generosity directly benefits our children and the entire district.
